The history of the cantilever chair

After the economic crisis and the subsequent acquisition of Thonet, a symbiotic relationship began with the design of German classical modernism, as it was primarily shaped by the Bauhaus and associated names such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Pérriand and, last but not least, Mart Stam.

It was also Mart Stam who, at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, introduced one of the most pivotal innovations in chair design of the new century: the cantilever chair. This chair lacks rear legs, but instead has front legs that curve into a curved, S-shaped form, into which the seat shell is inserted. His design remains in the product range today, as the Thonet S43.

What makes Thonet special?

Thonet owes its success to groundbreaking innovations: The development of the first furniture made of bent, solid wood was a world first, making the company a global player. Michael Thonet perfected a technique for making beech staves flexible using steam, creating lightweight, elegant, and cost-effective furniture. These classic designs are still manufactured in the traditional way today.

Almost 200 years

Thonet began in Boppard on the Rhine, where Michael Thonet developed the first furniture made of bent beechwood around 1830. This innovation was a huge success and attracted the interest of Prince Metternich, which led to the relocation of the company headquarters to Vienna. From there, Thonet conquered the world with its bentwood furniture and became a pioneer in global product availability.

Eager and determined

Thonet is committed to sustainable business practices in all aspects – from concept to finished product. The company strives to strike a balance between growth, responsible resource management, and environmental protection. It optimizes manufacturing processes to delay disposal through the use of durable materials and recycles solvents from production. Thonet is committed to environmentally friendly measures, using FSC-certified wood and electricity from sustainable sources.
