USM Haller and art

The fact that USM has barely changed its construction and design in almost 60 years, yet remains highly contemporary, demonstrates how timelessly beautiful its furniture is, despite — or perhaps because of — the fundamental principle: form follows function. USM Haller has received numerous awards for the design of its furniture, the first being its inclusion in the "Neue Sammlung" of the State Museum of in 1980.

In 1988, the USM construction method was officially recognized as applied art — a first in Germany. This paved the way for a more general recognition of interior and furniture design as what it ultimately is: art. The crowning achievement was its inclusion in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in 2001.

What makes USM Haller special?

The USM Haller system is characterized by its revolutionary construction, consisting of chrome-plated steel tubes, powder-coated metal shelves, and steel balls. These components form a flexible skeleton into which the shelves can be inserted. The modular design allows for virtually infinite combinations and easy expansion, making it ideal for flexible office design.

Tradition meets innovation

USM was founded in 1895 by Ulrich Schärer in Münsingen, Germany, and the name still bears the initials of those early days. In the 1960s, Paul Schärer, Ulrich's grandson, took over the leadership and modernized the company together with architect Fritz Haller, leading to the development of the revolutionary modular furniture system. The striking design was patented in 1965 and has remained unchanged ever since.

Furniture for a lifetime

USM Haller was the first company in Europe to receive Greenguard certification, demonstrating its strict adherence to environmental protection standards. Its furniture is largely made of stainless steel and is almost entirely recyclable. USM furniture also has a high upcycling rate and has been awarded C2C certification. This means it exists in a closed-loop system and can be fully recycled after use.
