The philosophy of Wilkhahn

Success through design – that's how you could describe Wilkhahn's philosophy when it comes to the design and manufacture of its furniture. Form always follows its function and remains consistently purist and free of unnecessary elements, which lends the furniture class. A central part of Wilkhahn's philosophy is also its social responsibility, especially with regard to its own production facilities, the company structure, and its employees. As early as the 1970s, Wilkhahn made "social justice" the guiding principle of its identity and introduced profit-sharing for employees early on.

What makes Wilkhahn special?

Wilkhahn stands for high-quality design and the "Made in Germany" seal of approval. The company repeatedly sets standards in the furniture industry, both in Germany and internationally. Of particular note is the Trimension technology, which makes the chair a flexible piece of seating that tilts not only forward and backward, but also sideways to promote healthier sitting.

100 years is a long time

Wilkhahn was founded in 1907 by master carpenters Friedrich Hahne and Christian Wilkening near Hanover. Initially specializing in solid beech furniture, the company continued its rise to become an international furniture retailer after World War II with a clear focus on design. Wilkhahn shaped the modern understanding of design, particularly through its collaborations with prominent designers, such as the Bauhaus students.

Sustainability and eco-design

Wilkhahn is committed to sustainable production and design innovations. Its production halls are exemplary examples of environmentally friendly construction, and since the 1990s, attention has been paid to environmentally conscious manufacturing. The use of photovoltaics and vegetable oil for energy supply contributes to the sustainable coverage of approximately 50% of energy needs. Wilkhahn has also distinguished itself through the high recyclability of its furniture.
